Social Work Events Child protection systems and outcomes: a comparative perspective (MRC Event)

This event is part of the Making Research Count (York) programme which aims to promote communication and knowledge sharing between academics and social work and social care professionals.

The Hestia research study compared child protection systems and practice in England, the Netherlands and Germany in order to investigate different approaches to child protection and the impact on children and families. The project was undertaken by researchers at the University of York in collaboration with the University of Groningen and the German Youth Institute.

The study compared the operation of child protection services in four English local authorities, and considered the child protection policy, systems and practice of England, Germany and the Netherlands. Drawing on an analysis of 400 case files in each country, and despite apparent similarities between the three countries, there were some striking differences in approaches to child protection.

The seminar provides an opportunity to reflect on the research findings and to consider how child protection policy and practice in your local authority compares to those included in the study.
